Potential Energy: Capacitors


Capacitors are composed of two parallel plates that have opposing charges. This difference in charge creates a difference in the potential energy in the circuit.

The charge on a parallel plate capacitor, like the one shown in the image at right, is called the capacitance and is found by

 Capacitors:
  • In parallel total capacitance (CTC_T) is found by adding the capacitors:  C1+C2+...+Cn=CT
  • In series total capacitance (CTC_T) is found by the inverse of the sum of the inverses.
