- When slowing down or making a turn, the rider digs the edge of their board into the snow and leans in the direction they want to go. When slowing down, the rider needs to create as much friction with the board's edge and the snow so that the net force can equal zero. Snowboarder's tend to "carve" (turning) when wanting to slow down on a steep mountain. Carving builds up snow to create a greater opposing force, ultimately slowing down the rider.
