Wormholes are a real concept, not simply something out of science fiction. Also called Einstein-Rosen bridges because of the pair who theorized of their existence(Albert Einstein, and Nathan Rosen), they are in essence bridges or shortcuts through spacetime. One way to visualize wormholes is by imagining our universe as a two dimensional plane. Then if that plane was bent so that two points on opposite ends are touched together the place where they touch would be a wormhole, allowing matter to travel enormous distances/times possibly instantaneously. In reality however, we have been unable to find a wormhole despite general relativity suggesting their existance.
In the movie, what allowed Interstellar travel was a perfectly spherical wormhole with a radius of 2 km that appeared next to Saturn.
