Limitations to the Basic Model

Line

This basic model has many limitations:

- This model doesn't take into account the angles of the ropes between the anchors.
These angles can increase the perceived fall factor significantly.

- This model neglects frictional forces in the system, which are far from neglectable.
These forces cause the lower parts of the rope (who pass a lot of anchors - thus undergoing a lot of friction) to stretch much less.

-This model assumes that the rope is mass-less. This is not the real case.

-This model is a linear approximation of the ropes force. Though it is very close to reality, it is not perfect.
This is especially the case in longer elongations (over 30%).

Despite these limitations, it is still a very good approximation of the ropes mechanics.
