THIRD ANNUAL FABULOUS FAIRBANKS FASHION SHOW

Last month during the UAFÕs new faculty orientation, UWA and the WomenÕs Center once again presented a Fabulous Fairbanks Fashion Show in the Wood Center ballroom.  This comic fashion extravaganza introduced UAF newcomers to dressing for success during a Fairbanks winter.

Associate Professor Sine Anahita was the Master of Ceremonies. Associate Professor Josef Glowa modeled a vintage Adirondack black bear coat and Adjunct Professor Susan Hurley-Glowa modeled a vintage golden fox fur coat. Then Susan returned to model a vintage Hudson Bay wool coat with characteristic pattern and colors showing trading points and stripes.

Helen Howard showed an Eddie Bauer parka with Alaska Native crafted parka cover and a wolf and wolverine ruff worn with black and white calf-skin mukluks made with Native - tanned moose hide soles.

UWA President, Kayt Sunwood  was dressed for research travel to small villages by light plane complete with computer bag, food, research supplies, plus a therma-rest pad and sleeping bag Ōfor sleeping on floors in classrooms.Ķ Probably, the cleverest addition to her attire was Ōa blinking light so pilots and snow machine drivers can see Kayt in the dark of the Arctic.Ķ

Kristina Ahlnas modeled a U S military parka which she insists is Ōbig enough to fit visiting funding agents from Washington who donÕt realize that springtime in Fairbanks can be 40 belowĶ and bunny boots because Ōin Fairbanks it is acceptable to wear bunny boots to formal occasions.Ķ

Dr. Nicole Mšlders and her husband Gerhard Kramm showed us how to stay warm in Alaska and yet be at the height of fashion in evening and dancing attire. Their ballroom dance demonstration thrilled the audience

It was a great fashion show and much appreciated by the faculty.

UWA TABLE AT THE FACULTY ORIENTATION

Laura Lynn Walsh and I sat at a table at the New Faculty Orientation on August 25th and a number of people were interested in the UWA, especially as Joy Morrison had included an invitation to the Fall Tea in their packet. Two of the men seemed interested to know whether they would be welcome at the Tea, especially as the talent show sounded interesting. There were not as many faculty coming through as last year, but those who were here seemed excited about it and they mentioned enjoying the Fabulous Fashion Show of the previous day. One person was particularly interested in the Scholarship Committee. – Helen Howard, UWA Vice President – Membership

BAZAAR COMMITTEE MAKES PROGRESS

UWA is gearing up for the 2009 Holiday Bazaar, our scholarship fund raiser. Thanks to Rita Osborne, our UWA Bazaar message phone 456-4009 is up and running--and needs someone to respond to the messages. Please contact Rita Osborne at 479-4535 or ritaosborne@gmail.com if you can coordinate the answering machine messages for the Bazaar.

Laura Walsh used the laptop loaned to us by the WomenÕs Center to spruce up our vendor database and she printed over 375 envelopes addressed to our Bazaar vendors.

Last Thursday, Ginny Kawasaki, Helen Howard, Judy Williams and Georgene Nielsen met in office space provided by Vonna Husby to send out registration materials to all our vendors.  Thanks to UWA members, itÕs working.

DENALI ROAD LOTTERY TICKETS

I would like to get Denali Road Lottery tickets for Sept 18, 19, 20 and 21 to give to new faculty, so if anyone was lucky enough to win one that they wonÕt be using, please contact me at 474-5055.

Alternately, if anyone would like to include one of the new faculty (or a couple) when they drive the park road, please let me know as well. This would be a nice intro to UWA. Many thanks. – Joy Morrison

FALL WELCOME TEA

The UWA Welcome Tea is set for Sunday, September 27 at 2 PM at the U of A presidentÕs residence, 431 Gold Dust Drive, Fairbanks.

We hope our members will collect names and contact numbers for those who are new in the area as they meet them throughout August and September and invite them to the Tea.  This is an opportunity to introduce UWA to friends and newcomers.

The theme this year will is ĶHidden TalentsĶ, so prepare a song, bring a painting, show a book you are writing, demonstrate Tai 'Chi, etc. RSVP by e-mail to Helen Howard hmh@acsalaska.net or leave a phone message at 374-2914.

SALAD LUNCHEON

A Salad Lunch is a wonderful way of enjoying a healthy and excellent meal with the minimum of trouble. The hostess provides something to drink, some bread and a dessert, if she so wishes, while each guest brings a salad. The more the merrier, and the more dishes the greater the variety.

The first Salad Luncheon of the season will be held at Helen Howard's new house in town, 3015 Riverview Drive, on Thursday, September 17th at 12:00 noon. Although she has not yet moved in, the house is quite commodious.

Please e-mail RSVP's to Helen at hmh@acsalaska.net, or leave a message on the answering machine either at HelenÕs house in town (374-2914) or at her current Chena Hot Springs Road residence (488-2314).

Directions: From Airport Road take Market Street to the North in to Westgate Subdivision. At the fork turn Left on Sunset Drive. Then, left on Riverview Drive. Continue past Kiska Drive and itÕs the second house on the left, white with blue shutters.

RECYCLE SALE

The Fall Recycle Sale is scheduled for noon on Saturday, October 10th in the Wood Center at UAF. There is a lot to do before we open our doors to the public.

Any one in the community is encouraged to move gently used items off their garage shelves and out of the backs of their closets and get them back into use by bringing them to the Recycle Sale. ItÕs a good way to sell things you no longer have use for without the hassle of managing a sale at your home.

UWA provides a place where sellers can drop off their items in the morning; we sell them beginning at noon.

Helpers are needed throughout that day anywhere from set up time at 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Please contact Georgene Nielsen 479-0988 or nielsen@mosquitonet.com  if you are willing to help with this event.

UWA SCHOLARSHIP FUND RAISER – 2009 HOLIDAY BAZAAR

This year, the UWA Holiday Bazaar will take place on Saturday and Sunday, November 7th and 8th.  There is still a lot to do before that time.

Our second bazaar work party to conduct the lottery for vendor tables and mail out the results is scheduled for Saturday, September 26. As in past years, we have requested the use of the Schaible cabin for our task and Patty Hamilton is looking in to its availability. We will begin at 10:00 AM on Saturday. The job takes about 5 hours so, if you canÕt get there at 10:00, show up when you are free.

If you are available to work on the lottery, please contact either Georgene Nielsen at 479-0988 or email nielsen@mosquitonet.com  or call Shari George at 455-9000 or email fnswg@uaf.edu.

WAYS YOU CAN HELP WITH THE HOLIDAY BAZAAR

CanÕt make it to a scheduled work party? There are lots of other ways to be a part of UWAÕs scholarship fund raiser.

Please consider using your organizational talents to help in areas like scheduling UWA volunteers for the two days of the Bazaar or by checking the UWA message phone for vendor inquiries; someone who will check it daily, return messages, forward information to the Bazaar Committee. Maybe you could use your people skills for contacting the Lathrop Ski Team coordinator about providing porter services for UWA vendors or by arranging Security with the UAF police. We also seek members willing to place UWA Bazaar banners and flyers in the Fairbanks area or to assist Kat Ferrell with media (publicity.

If you can participate in any way, please contact either Georgene Nielsen at 479-0988 or email nielsen@mosquitonet.com  or call Shari George at 455-9000 or email fnswg@uaf.edu.

WALK/SKI GROUP

The walking group will resume in September.  Contact Rita Osborne at 479-4535 or ritaosborne@gmail.com to let her know of your interest.

BOOK GROUP

The September book club selection is I Know Just What You Mean by Ellen Goodman and Patricia O'Brien. This book is a dialog between two good friends who are both journalists and whose friendship has spanned many years and many changes in their lives.  The topic is women's friendships.  A number of interesting questions are explored, such as:  1) how can a friendship survive long distance? and 2) Can friendship last if there are differences in professional success? and 3) how do women's friendships differ from men's?

I will have a list of suggestions for upcoming books at the Fall Tea and those interested can vote on them.  If you would like a copy of the list in progress, email me:  lwalsh@acsalaska.net.

I would also appreciate suggestions for best meeting times.  - Laura Walsh
