A UWA DONATION
The University WomenÕs
Association received a hand-written thank you from Jo Scott for our $300
donation to the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival. It reads:
ÒDear
Laura Lynn and friends in UWA,
Once
again we are deeply grateful for your long-time Festival support.
Thank you
sincerely! I hope to see many of you (with your children!)
at Lunch
Bites and I hope others of you (like Laura Lynn!) will register
for some
of our "fun" classes.
Love, Jo
Scott
P.S. Your
gift helps me in giving some help to several women! :-)Ó
The Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival runs from Sunday, July 19th through Sunday, August 2nd. – Laura Lynn Walsh, UWA Treasurer
FABULOUS FAIRBANKS FASHION SHOW NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
In 2007, we revived the University WomenÕs Association comic fashion show featuring ÒFairbanks wearÓ for the entertainment and enlightenment of new University faculty. This year UWA and the WomenÕs Center will once again present the lighter side of living in Interior Alaska. The fashion show is set for Monday, August 24 at noon in the Wood Center ballroom.
Mark
your calendar, and contact Kayt Sunwood (phone: 474-6311 or email: kayt.sunwood@uaf.edu ) to assure your spot in
the fashion stage line-up. Again this year, UWA president, Kayt Sunwood will
model her clothing and equipment for research trips/travel to remote villages by
small aircraft. Does anyone have a dog equipped with coat and booties?
In 2007 canine model Tipper stole the show.
Come
and help us introduce newcomers to dressing for success during a Fairbanks
winter. Contact Kayt
with a description of what you will be modeling so we can fit you into the
line-up. This is a not-to-be-missed event, so call Kayt right away so she can
develop the list of models, descriptions of what they will be wearing, the line
up for Òwalking the stageÓ and the text for the Fabulous Fairbanks Fashion Show
extravaganza!
HELEN HOWARDÕS
WATER COLORS WILL BE ON DISPLAY
One of our talented UWA members will soon have her art on display. On Friday, July 17 there will be
an Art Show by Helen Howard, Water colors, and Craig Cheledinas, Pottery and
Glass at the North Pole Grange Hall Gallery. The gallery opens at 4L30-9:00 pm with artistsÕ
reception from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.
WALK/SKI GROUP
The walking/skiing group will not
be meeting on a regular basis for the remainder of summer, however, if you
would like to join us in walking/hiking activities, please give Rita Osborne a
call at 479-4535 or ritaosborne@gmail.com to see what is planned
for that week.
BOOK GROUP
The Book Club will be meeting to
discuss What to Eat and Food Politics by Marion Nestle.
The best date seems to be Monday,
July 6th, at 4:00ish at Gulliver's (upstairs). Author Marion
Nestle will be giving a ÒPolitics of FoodÓ lecture in Schaible Auditorium on
Wednesday, July 15th. If you are interested in the politics of food and
the interconnection to nutrition, feel free to join us, even if you haven't
read her books.
For later consideration, the book club is in the process of reading Victor Hugo's Les Miserables and I Know Just What You Mean by Ellen Goodman and Patricia O'Brien. - Laura Walsh, lwalsh@acsalaska.net or 374-8084.
INTERNATIONAL DINERS
International Diners is a fun way to collect some great recipes and the dinners are a feast. The participants are asked to choose a month they will host a meal and decide upon a cuisine theme. Those whose homes are unable to accommodate a dinner party may partner with someone who can. When the theme and date are announced, diners interested in attending contact the host and indicate if they are bringing a guest. The host plans a menu and each diner receives one dish to prepare. The cost of the meal is divided evenly among the participants. Every dinner offers a unique culinary experience with an extensive variety of dishes to savor.
UWA International Diners is on hiatus until fall. At the Fall Welcome Tea in September members will have a chance to sign up to participate.
Barbara Braley did a splendid job
of coordinating the International Diners group for many years. Now itÕs time
for another UWA member to try the coordinators position. Thank you,
Barbara for all the wonderful dinners.
SALAD LUNCHEON
A Salad Lunch is a wonderful way of enjoying a healthy and excellent meal with the minimum of trouble. The hostess provides something to drink, some bread and a dessert, if she so wishes, while each guest brings a salad. The more the merrier, and the more dishes the greater the variety.
The Salad Lunch meetings have
been discontinued until the fall unless someone wishes to host a Lunch, in
which case, please call Helen Howard with a date. Leave messages only on the
answering machine at
488-2314.- Helen Howard, Coordinator
