FALL WELCOME TEA
Last
month UWA held a Fall Tea for members old and new, welcoming all who are
interested in the University Women's Association. Patty Hamilton hosted this 1950Õs themed membership event on Sunday, September 14, at her home.
Bobbie Rice regaled us with humorous stories of UAF during the
Ō50Õs. The event was lit by poodle skirts, saddle shoes and reminiscing. Many members brought something from the Ō50Õs
and shared stories from their lives, the lives of their parents or even grandparents.

BUNNELL HOUSE DONATION
Kat Ferrell provided us with
news of the University WomenÕs Association recent donation of $1,000 to the UAF
Tanana Valley Campus Bunnell House Early Childhood Lab School. Bunnell House
provides observation and practicum experiences in a model lab school
environment for university students studying early childhood education and
related disciplines. Bunnell House also provides high-quality licensed care to
children of university students and faculty and staff members.
The UWA donation is three
times more than any previous donations made by our organization to the Bunnell
House.
INTERNATIONAL
DINERS
International Diners is a fun way to collect some
great recipes and the dinners are a feast. The participants are asked to choose
a month they will host a meal and decide upon a cuisine theme. Those whose
homes are unable accommodate a dinner party may partner with someone who can.
When the theme and date are announced, diners
interested in attending contact the host and indicate if they are bringing a
guest. The host plans a menu and each diner receives one dish to prepare. The
cost of the meal is divided evenly among the participants. Every dinner offers
a unique culinary experience with an extensive variety of dishes to savor.
The first gathering of the International Diners will be
Saturday, October 18th, 7pm at 1301 Maya Lane, the home
of Alan and Barbara Braley. It will
be an Oktoberfest menu and an opportunity to sign up for future dinners. If you
are interested in participating, email Barbara at bbraley@acsalaska.net or call 457-8957.
UWA FALL RECYCLE SALE
Its time to check
your garage or closet for winter items you are not using. Put them in the UWA Fall Recycle Sale. At noon on Saturday, October 25th the Sale opens in the Wood Center ballroom.
UWA provides a place where you can drop off their items in the morning, we sell
them beginning at noon, and you return in the late afternoon to collect your money and any items that did not sell.
Volunteers who work the Recycle Sale get the extra benefit of pre-shopping
before the Sale opens to the public at noon.
Please contact August-Michelle
Abukasis (email fsaem@uaf.edu / telephone
452-5263) if you are interested in working on the Recycle
Sale. Helpers are needed
for a variety of shifts to cover between 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. the day of the Sale.
All those who can help by posting flyers advertising the
Recycle Sale, call August soon.
SALAD
LUNCHEON
The Salad
Luncheon group meets once a month at a memberÕs home. The hostess chooses the
date. We each bring a salad and the hostess provides beverage, bread
and dessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please invite
them to attend as your guest. ItÕs a fun way to meet with friends and relax
Sadly, Myllie Thomas had to cancel the
September 29th salad luncheon.
This just in from Judy Williams: The October Salad Luncheon will be Tuesday, October
21st, 12 noon, at my home, 3868 Chigmit Drive. I live
in the Cripple Creek area west of town.
Folks can get specific directions, if they need them, when they call 479-5465 or e-mail me at fljlw@alaska.net to RSVP. I look forward to seeing familiar faces
and meeting new salad luncheoneers!
The November
luncheon date is open, so we are looking for someone to host. If you would like to be our hostess, either email Helen Howard at hmh@acsalaska.netor leave a
telephone message at 488-2314, and together you can set the date.
UWA HOLIDAY BAZAAR
UWAÕs main scholarship fund raiser, the Holiday Bazaar is set for Saturday and Sunday, November 8th and 9th at the Wood Center. We expect to have over
100 vendors each day. We need the help and talents of all UWA members to make this fund raiser a success.
Our thanks go to Patty Hamilton for making the Schaible cabin
available for Bazaar work parties. Under
the guidance of Elizabeth Shapland, Holiday Bazaar committee members Kayt
Sunwood, Kat Ferrell, Janet Satchwell, Susan Hurley-Glowa, Ginny Kawasaki,
Georgene Nielsen, Rita McGrath, August Abukasis, Judy Williams and Laura Walsh
completed a lottery and sent out over 170 table assignments.
For the days of the Bazaar, we need our members
to fill positions as vendor check-in, door attendant, or floor walker. Ginny
Kawasaki will be telephoning members to fill those shifts.
Our UWA Holiday Bazaar email, fbuwa@uaf.edu, continues to receive vendor inquiries. Please refer friends who are
crafters to that email address or to our message telephone, 456-4009.
BOOK CLUB
Since this is short notice and
there isn't time for a planned shared reading, for an October meeting, I
thought we could do book talks - fiction, non-fiction, humor, anything goes.
Bring a book or two about which you can give us a short talk. Entice
others with interesting books you have read.
We will meet on Sunday,
October 12th at 3:00 pm at Laura
Walsh's house, 2555 Allen Adale Road,
on Chena Ridge. It is preferred that you RSVP to lwalsh@acsalaska.net , but you may call 374-8084, bearing in mind that there is no answering machine. –
Laura Walsh, book club coordinator

input about the best time and place to meet for a walk. Please contact Elizabeth at 474-4725 or boxshapland@alaska.net if you wish to walk weekdays with UWA members.
