SALAD LUNCHEON

The Salad Luncheon group meets once a month at a memberŐs home. The hostess chooses the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess provides beverage, bread and dessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please invite them to attend as your guest. ItŐs a fun way to meet with friends and relax

Elizabeth Shapland hosted the December salad luncheon. With a total of ten in attendance, there was a wealth of salads from which to choose and we filled every seat at her table. Thank you so much, Elizabeth, it was a lovely holiday luncheon.

At the time of this writing, Grace Moore has held the January luncheon at her home log home high on the hills overlooking Fairbanks. Helen Howard reports besides eight UWA members there were two visitors: Jane Behlke and Judi Stoop. ŇGrace set our table with a lovely tablecloth that reminded one of Christmas, and we had the honor of using a wonderful antique set of dishes that had been sent her by an elderly friendÓ. Thank you, Grace, for your hospitality.

The February luncheon has been arranged with Cora Cook for noon on Monday, February 11. Cora lives just past the HamiltonŐs house on Gold Dust Drive off Yankovich Road. Please call Cora at 479-2487 to RSVP and to receive directions.

If you would like to be our March luncheon hostess, please email Helen Howard at hmh@acsalaska.net or give Cynthia Dorman a call at 457-4428 and together you can set the date.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE

The UWA Scholarship application period for the 2008-09 school year scholarship awards will run from February 1 to March 31, 2008.  The scholarship committee will review the applications during the month of April and winners will be announced by the first of May.  We are anticipating quite a few applications so if you haven't yet expressed interest in helping review scholarship applications, please let co-chairs Alexis Runstadler (acrunstadler@yahoo.com) or Sine Anahita (sine.anahita@uaf.edu) know.

BOOK GROUP

Laura Walsh says: ŇWe are trying to schedule the book group for the fourth Tuesday of every month. I realize this doesn't work for everyone, but it seemed to work for most of the people who replied when input was requested.

The book discussion for January will feature Anne of Green Gables and how it compares to books written more currently. The meeting will be held Tuesday, January 22nd at 7:00 pm at Gulliver's.

February's book is The OmnivoreŐs Dilemma and the meeting will by hosted by Elizabeth Shapland on Tuesday, February 26th. Contact Elizabeth for exact time and directions.

March's book will be Bill Bryson's In a Sunburned Country - a travel book about Australia. This book is a lighthearted and fun look at one of the big countries "down under". We will aim for Tuesday, March 25th at Gulliver's.

WALK/SKI GROUP

This in from Cynthia Dorman: Usually, Elizabeth Shapland and I meet with the skiers at the parking lot next to Ballaine Lake on Monday and Friday at 10:30AM.  The group waits 5 to 6 minutes and then heads out with whoever is there.  The pace is moderate and the ski 45-75 minutes in length.

We are still trying to arrange a schedule that will work for more people. In general the trails are now good; enough snow and tracks.  The general rule has been: at below -10 or colder, we donŐt ski. I did enjoy a short ski at -15 last week. At lower temperatures, maybe some last minute phone calls would be in order to determine if anyone is interested.  I donŐt leave the house until about 10:10AM.

The walking group does not have many takers and, with Elizabeth away for a short time, I have not been as faithful as I should have been. We may need to adjust the time for walking.  At the moment, I will be happy to walk with anyone who would like to name a day and time.

Call or e-mail me if you have any questions or suggestions of times/locations: Cynthia at 457-4428 or c.dorman@alaska.net.

INTERNATIONAL DINERS

International Diners is a fun way to collect some great recipes and the dinners are a feast. The participants are asked to choose a month they will host a meal and decide upon a cuisine theme. Those whose homes are unable accommodate a dinner party may partner with someone who can.  When the theme and date are announced, diners interested in attending contact the host and indicate if they are bringing a guest. The host plans a menu and each diner receives one dish to prepare. The cost of the meal is divided evenly among the participants. Every dinner offers a unique culinary experience with an extensive variety of dishes to savor.

The International Diners held their first gathering of the season on Sunday, December 16th. The meal was outstanding! Ten diners enjoyed this Hungarian meal, hosted by Barbara and Alan Braley. It was a true holiday hit. A special thank you goes to Barbara, for providing all the diners with copies of the recipes used.

The International Diners next gathering is scheduled for Sunday, February 10th at the home of John and Laura Walsh. The cuisine will be Suriname. Please let Laura by January 27th if you're interested in coming. You may email Laura at lwalsh@acsalaska.net or call 374-8084. A recipe and directions to her home will be provided.

UWA MOM & KIDŐS GROUP

No date has been scheduled for a January play group.  If you are interested in scheduling a Mom and kidŐs get together at your home or another location like the Library or Gymnastics, Inc, give Alexis Runstadler a call at 452-1044.
