SALAD LUNCHEON
The Salad Lunch group meets once a month at a member's home. The hostess chooses
the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess usually provides beverages,
bread and dessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please
invite them to attend as your guest. It's a fun way to meet with friends
and relax. For more information call Floss Caskey at 457-4424.
Myllie Thomas hosted the August salad luncheon at her new home on Eleventh Avenue. Floss Caskey writes," Myllie Thomas was the consummate hostess! The August Salad Lunch was delightful. Thank you for inviting us to your lovely new home."
UWA members will not have a Salad Luncheon in September. The Fall Welcome Tea will be a wonderful time to meet. We are happy to have a hostess for October, Grace Moore.
SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
Two young women received UWA scholarships for the Fall 2005 semester. Hannah
Lynn Bjornstad is the recipient of the $1,000 scholarship. She is a music
major in the College of Liberal Arts. Terin A. Walton-Rantz is the recipient
of the $1,500 scholarship. She is a sociology major in the College of Liberal
Arts.
Treasurer Barbara Day is inviting them to our Fall Tea.
LETS ALL HAVE TEA NEXT SUNDAY
The Fall Welcome Tea will be held at the UAF president's home at 431 Gold Dust
Drive on Sunday, September 11th, from 2 to 4 p.m. Many thanks to Patty Hamilton,
our hostess. Directions: (these directions assume you are coming from the
University) Farmer's Loop Road to Ballaine Road, then left on to Yankovich
Road, then right on to Gold Dust Drive.
We hope our members have collected names and contact numbers for those who are new in town as they met them over the summer. This is an opportunity to introduce UWA to friends and newcomers. Invite them to the Tea!
Please bring with you to the Tea a single flower stem, a leafy twig, a colorful piece of ribbon or a spray of Fall berries to be worked into a floral arrangement. Together we can make something unique and beautiful.
PUT ON YOUR DANCING SHOES!
University Women' Association is again sponsoring a free contra dance at the
Wood Center Ballroom on September 17th from 8pm to 11pm. Dance instruction
will be provided by caller Barbara Braley with music by Polar Drive. The wonderful
thing about contra dance is that if you can walk, you can contra dance. Every
dance is taught and practiced before the music starts. Even then, the caller
will remind you of the next move throughout the dance. Come give it a try.

We are looking for members who can post flyers on bulletin boards around Fairbanks
and North Pole. We expect much interest from sellers and buyers.
Rita Osborne and Georgene Nielsen are the co-chairs. This is a fun event. Volunteers are needed from shifts between 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the day of the sale. Your help is greatly appreciated. Please contact Rita (479-4535, rfrso@uaf.edu) or Georgene (479-0988, nielsen@mosquitonet.com).
UWA HOLIDAY BAZAAR from Rita Osborne
Vendor notices and registration forms were mailed to Holiday Bazaar vendors
on September 1st. A big thanks to Vonna Husby for the meeting space and to
Lorraine Phillips, Floss Caskey, Jane Reilly, Ginny Kawasaki, Barbara Day,
Georgene Nielsen, and Rita Osborne for helping with the mailing and the preparations
involved.
We're still looking for a coordinator to help the bazaar committee to meet deadlines. Ads will be in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner this week soliciting new vendors. Our message phone is activated (456-4009) and is being checked daily. The second mailing for vendor table assignments will be held on Thursday 9/29 from 1-4 p.m.
Much work needs to be done to hold the Bazaar, scheduled for November 5 & 6.
Please reserve those dates since we need everyone's participation. Our dedicated
volunteers need someone to coordinate this event. Another option would be for
two members to co-chair the Bazaar. Call Rita Osborne at 479-4535 to volunteer.
BOOK GROUP
The UWA book group will meet Monday, October 10 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm in the
conference room at Noel Wien Library to discuss The Bookseller of Kabul by
Asne Seierstad. Food is permitted in the conference room, and our discussions
are very informal. Please join us!
For the November 14th meeting we have selected Cruelest Miles: the heroic story of dogs and men in a race against an epidemic. For more information contact Judie Triplehorn at gilibrary@gi.alaska.edu. Alternately, you can fax Judie at 474-6790 (Attn. Judie Triplehorn) or by mail at P. O. Box 80826, Fairbanks
