SALAD LUNCHEON
The Salad Lunch group meets once a month at a member's home. The hostess chooses
the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess usually provides beverages,
bread and dessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please
invite them to attend as your guest. It's a fun way to meet with friends
and relax.
Our compliments and our thanks to Grace Moore who hosted the Salad Luncheon on October 19th.
We are so fortunate to have Cora Cook as our hostess for the November 17 luncheon at her home, 455 Golddust Drive, off Yankovich Road. Please call 479-2487 to RSVP and to receive directions.
On December 19, Elizabeth Shapland will host the holiday season luncheon.
UWA AT KUAC
We would like to thank the following people volunteered at KUAC during their
fall pledge drive: Barbara Day and Jim Dixon who represented UWA answering
the phones Wednesday afternoon and Wendy Rousalis, Georgene Nielsen, Alan
Braley and Barbara Braley who handled the evening shift. The phones were
constantly ringing and they were kept very busy. It was a fun evening and
made University Women's Association's name known to a wide listening audience.
BOOK GROUP
The UWA book group will meet Monday, November 14 from 5:30 to 7:00 PM in the conference room at Noel Wien Library to discuss Cruelest Miles: the heroic story of dogs and men in a race against an epidemic by Gay and Laney Salisbury. Food is permitted in the conference room, and our discussions are very informal. Please join us!
For the December 12th meeting we have selected Year of Miss Agnes by Kirkpatrick
Hill.
In December we have traditionally read a short "children's" book,
met at a restaurant, and
exchanged used books as gifts ("selected" by the recipient through
the wrapping!). It's a fun meeting
and we hope you will join us. Call Elizabeth (474-4725) for this year's location.
Judie Triplehorn regretfully announces that in January 2006 the group will be disbanded due to sparse attendance.
INTERNATIONAL DINERS
For those who have not participated in International Diners before: A host
chooses a month and decides upon a cuisine theme. The host contacts all International
Diners who have indicated that they plan to attend. Based on the response,
the host plans a meal, and all participants will get a recipe to prepare.
Participants are asked to keep a monetary total of what they spend to prepare
their dish. During the dinner, all totals are added together, and an average
sum is assigned to each person. Thus, a person who prepared an inexpensive
dish will likely end up paying some money, and those who prepared an expensive
dish will likely get some money back. It is a fun way to collect some great
recipes and the dinners are a feast.
The season's first meeting of the International Diners was held in the home of Alan and Barbara Braley. The fall potluck was an intimate dinner with 9 participants who provided fabulous food and lively conversation. We have made plans for dinners beginning in January 2006. If anyone is interested in hosting for November or December 2005, please contact Barbara Braley at 457-8957 or send an email to bbraley@acsalaska.net.
UWA HOLIDAY BAZAAR
Much work needs to be done to hold the Bazaar which takes place Saturday, November
5 & Sunday, November 6. Please reserve those dates since we need all
of our member's participation.
We have many new vendors participating in this year's Bazaar. Please encourage friends and family to attend both days.
As she has done for UWA for several years, Ginny Kawasaki is coordinating the UWA volunteers whose help makes the Holiday Bazaar run smoothly. Ginny personally thanks those who have returned her telephone messages and volunteered for the Bazaar. She really appreciates you. Its not too late, because Ginny has a volunteer spot for everyone and there are still open shifts. Call her now at 456-5192 to help at the Bazaar this Saturday or Sunday.
MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY
The 2005-2006 UWA Membership Directory will be given out at the Holiday Bazaar.
Directories that are not picked up will be mailed to our members after the
bazaar. The directory contains the names of all ladies whose membership forms
were received by the 14th of October. The ones received after that date will
be included in future newsletters so their names can be added.
SKI/WALK GROUP
Let's celebrate the success of the Bazaar with the start of winter exercise
beginning November 8th! Skiers, meet at Ballaine Lake parking lot at any
of the following times which suit you: Tuesdays at 10 and Fridays at 10.
We will set off about 5-7 minutes after the hour with whoever is present
and ski for 45-60 minutes on fairly flat trails. Do not worry about your
skill level: we can accommodate all!
Walkers, meet at the Big Dipper ice arena on Thursdays at 10 for an hour's walk. No need to R.S.V.P. but if you have questions, feel free to phone Elizabeth at 474-4725. Email her at boxshapland@alaska.net.
UWA SCHOLARSHIPS
UWA has received applications for spring 2006 scholarships. Jane Bechtel and
Barbara Day are co-chairing the scholarship committee. Hopefully, the reading
of the scholarship applications will start in mid November. Barbara Day will
send an email or telephone anyone that checked an interest in the scholarship
committee on their membership form.
