COME CELEBRATE UWA'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY!
Walk down memory lane with us as we look back over five decades of
accomplishments. Come say hello to old friends and welcome new members and
scholarship recipients to our great group and participate in our brief
annual meeting.
We’ll be treated to some great sandwiches, desserts, tea and coffee created
by the chefs of Desserts First, as we celebrate our jubilee and look forward
to the next fifty years.
Join us Sunday May 4th from 1:30 to 4 pm at Desserts First, 4125th Ave.
(between Noble and Lacey). Please feel free to invite any interested
guests/prospective new members. Each person attending should confirm by
sending $10 to Barbara Day, 3114 Chinook Drive, Fairbanks, AK 99709-4042.
You will receive an invitation in the mail.
THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE WAS RECEIVED FROM OUR PRESIDENT:
Dear Members,
It has been my pleasure to serve as president of UWA for the past two
years. I have learned so much about Fairbanks through all the wonderful
women I have met.
We are at a critical juncture for UWA and we need to strategize how we
shall move forward. I can see from looking through the history of the
organization that many of the previously 'regular events' have not been
taking place in recent years. That is only natural since our lives have
changed so dramatically in the
past 50 years since the inception of UWA. In my mind, the Holiday Bazaar and
the scholarships are our priorities and we can not have one without the
other. The Recycle Sale is also a highlight for many in the community. Even
though we do not make any profits from this event, it spreads good will and
we usually get a few new members to join with the enticement of
pre-shopping! I think we must maintain these three events to the best of our
ability.
So please think about stepping up to serve for one of our currently
vacant offices so this organization continues to be a vital part of the
university community. I have been one of the people to push hard to
computerize everything because it saves time, which most of us have so
little of these days. I need to take a lesser role in UWA because of my
work commitments but I will be there pushing for computerization! Thanks.
Cheers, Uma Bhatt

Nicole Molders, Uma Bhatt, and Elizabeth Shapland have worked on the
SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION FORM. UWA now has a clear form allowing female
students to apply on line. Applications are being taken this month.
The SALAD LUNCH will be at the home of Judy Williams, 3868 Chigmit Drive on
April 16. Please call her at 479-5465. Cora Cook hosted a lovely luncheon
last month.
UWA INTERNATIONAL DINERS: The diners will meet at the home of Nicole Molders
on April 19th at 7 PM. Nicole’s address is 1621 Howling Dog Trail. The
theme of the dinner will be “Rheinland”, a cuisine strongly influenced
by
the different people who “occasionally occupied” the area. It is
not
Bavarian. Nicole has room for 12 people, so call early to get directions
and a cooking assignment. (479-2284 or e-mail molders@gi.alaska.ed)
The March gathering of diners was at Seoul Gate Restaurant. The group of
eight was seated in a curtained area separated from the main room by an
enormous aquarium. The quiet setting was perfect for enjoying conversation
and a "brown bag" bottle of wine. Over a dozen condiments of relishes
and
vegetables were placed on each of the joined tables. Eight dishes were
ordered; everyone had a serving and a generous box of leftovers for the next
day. Everyone had praise for the food and were amazed by its quantity.
Nancy Klammer writes “we're looking for a statue (or bust) of Shakespeare
(also affectionately known as "the Bard”) to use in the Shakespearean
herb
bed at the Georgeson Garden.” Any size will do. Call Nancy at 457-4647.
