Aurora Elsewhere in the Solar System

by

ABSTRACT

Aurora can be defined as any optical manifestation of the interaction of extra-atmosphericenergetic particles with an atmosphere. Or one can add "under the control of a magnetic field" to the definition (e.g. C. T. Elvey). Or one can relax the "optical" and include everything from gamma rays to radio emissions. Either way, the Earth is not the only body in the solar system that is decorated with aurora. I will present an overview of the different auroras that occur on the various planets and satellites..
