Uma and David served as secondary school teachers in the rural western highlands of Kenya at Sochoi Secondary School. It was one of the most, if not the most, rewarding experiences in our lives. Each day brought with it new experiences related to our environment, our work, and our students. Not one day went passed without something interesting happening. Most of the time it was something funny, but sometimes sad.
One of our more memorable experiences was the time when we were trying to get a trapped baby bird out of our bath house and as we pondered what to do our cat rushed in and killed the poor thing. Uma screamed and within 5 minutes our students were at our door step to find out if David had been beating her. The honesty was refreshing. In our society we would have been too uncomfortable to go ask what was happening. Our students told us when we looked fat or when we had cobwebs in our house. They also told us many positive things also with the same refreshing honesty.
