Regimes of Earth's Global Pressure Regions

  • Pressure Variations over the last several decades highlight the four major regimes

  • The Siberian and North American High show a trend toward increasing pressure

  • The Aleutian and North Atlantic Lows show a strengthening as their trends are toward a lower pressure

The Temperature variations in this image show a long term trend toward a dominating Warm, Negative phase.

    The North Atlantic Oscillation
  • NAO was the first to be shown to have large scale effects on weather throughout the Northern Hemisphere

  • The NAO brings warm and wet weather to the Eastern United States and Northern Europe, while bringing unusually dry area to Southern Europe and North Africa

  • NAO was subsequently shown to be only one part of the larger scale Arctic Oscillation which couples the North Atlantic low with the Aleutian low over the North Pacific
