Refraction 4

There is a formula that relates the index of refraction for 2 materials. It is called Snell's law.

n1sin(A) = n2sin(B)

refraction

The black line is called the normal. That means it is at a right angle to the surface.

A is the angle of incidence. It is the angle between the normal and the incident ray.

B is the angle of refraction. It is the angle between the refracted ray and the normal.

We will use Snell's law to find n2,the index of refraction for water.

Solve Snell's law for n2.

a) n2 = n1 sin(A)sin(B)

b) n2 = n1 sin(AB)

c) n2 = n1 × sin(B)/sin(A)

d) n2 = n1 × sin(A)/sin(B)
