Planetary Nebulae

Planetary nebulae are a type of emission nebulae, so they give off light naturally. These nebulae consist of the cloud of ionized particles along with an expanding shell of more ionized particles. They were named planetary nebulae, because when viewing through a telescope they look like planets. These types of nebulae come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colors. One of the most popular planetary nebulae is the Cat's eye nebula shown.

Proto-Planetary Nebulae

A proto-planetary nebula is a  young, growing nebula that will one day become a full planetary nebula. These dust clouds are still getting food, generally some form of matter, from the star that created it. Since they are still growing, they come in a very wide variety of shapes and colors. The picture shown is the aptly named Red Rectangle nebula.

Supernovae Remnants

Also known as SNR's, these clouds are essentially the left-overs of a supernova. They contains very heavy elements, most of which are only created in supernovae remnants. The picture is Tycho's Supernova Remnant.
