Joule performed an experiment where a gas at high pressure inside calorimeter was allowed to expand into a larger volume. The apparatus had two recesses, with a dividing valve. The valve was opened, and gas escaped from the left side to fill the whole space. But as Joule theorized, since to mechanical work is done, the temperature will remain the same. Joule proved this with this apparatus.
