The
Later years
Leo, horrified by the
use of the atomic bomb, switched fields to molecular biology in 1947.
He was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 1960 and underwent a radiation
treatment that he had developed. He had another round in 1962, and then
the cancer remained in remission. The Council for a Livable World was
formed in 1962 with his help, and the group tried to tell the people
and Congress about the threat of nuclear war. They also advocated arms
control and nuclear disarmament. Leo died in May 1964 from a heart
attack.
