Parts and Terminology

 Ant ventilation plate

Horizontal plate directly above the propeller.  This plate prevents
air from being sucked down from the surface.  If mounted correctly it
also protects the propeller from air bubbles traveling down the haul.
The anti ventilation plate is an integral part of the cast lower unit of an
outboard.

 Blade Back

Surface of blade facing away from boat.

 Blade Face (Front)

Flat surface of blade facing toward the boat or direction of forward motion.

 Blade Tip

The maximum reach of the propeller at the very outside of the blade.
The tip separates the leading edge and the trailing edge.

 Leading edge

The part of the blade nearest the boat that is first to cut throw the water
as the propeller terns.

 Pitch

The degree to which the blades are angled.  Pitch is measured in inches
and denotes the number of inches a prop translates forward in one complete
rotation.

 Trailing edge

The part of the propeller furthest from the boat. This is the edge from
which the water leaves.

 Transom

Back or aft of boat which supports outboard.  The transom usually has
a built in depression to allow the outboard to sit lower in the water.
