There
are
two
main
points on how this gun works: the magnetic potential
energy and
Newton’s Cradle. As the ball moves toward the magnets in the Gaussian
gun, the
magnetic force acting on the ball becomes stronger and pulls the ball
toward
the rest of the system. Then when the ball hits the magnets, it
transfers its
kinetic energy to the rest of the system. In Newton’s Cradle, shown in
Figure
5, one ball is separated from the others and nudged toward them,
transferring
kinetic energy through the whole system.
After the energy has transferred through the last ball,
it releases from
the system, moving away from the others.
That’s how the Gaussian Gun works.
