Dr. Goddard launched the first rocket to use liquid fuel on March 16, 1926 from his Aunt Efiie's farm in Auburn, Massachusettes. The rocket reached a height of 41 feet and the flight lasted about 2.5 seconds traveling at roughly 60 miles per hour. It landed over 150 feet from the launch frame in his aunt's cabbage patch. This was an incredible first that made it possible to use rockets to explore space outside the atmosphere and lead to important advancements in missile technology but hopefully he didn't get it too much trouble with his aunt.
Here is a picture of Dr. Goddard with his first successful liquid rocket which he nicknamed Nell. |
