"Human beings sit atop what are essentially huge Roman Candles. Giant tubes filled with highly combustible mixtures of gases ... designed to send them hurdling millions of miles." (Unknown)Apollo X with its Command/Service Module (CSM) named "Charlie Brown" and its Lunar Module (LM) named "Snoopy" was the second mission to the moon. Apollo X was basically a full test for the future lunar landing. Apollo X was the first complete(CSM and LM) Apollo spacecraft to go to the moon. It was in the unique position to show that the hopes of landing on the moon were getting better and America had a chance to make the end of the decade deadline. Apollo X was put into orbit around the moon. Tomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan entered "Snoopy" and left John Young to skim the surface of the moon at an altitude of 5.5 miles (8.9 kilometers). I can almost imagine Tomas and Eugene looking at the lunar surface, which appeared close enough to touch, knowing they would not be able to land. After 8 hours of orbiting the moon "Snoopy" docked
with "Charlie Brown". The mission was a success both the CSM
and the LM preformed as expected except for some abnormalities in the
automatic abort guidance system on the LM. Having completed 31 lunar orbits,
and containing a large collection of photographs of the lunar surface,
the crew set a return course for home. |
