Glossary of Terms

Acceleration due to Gravity- Is equal to -9.8m/s2

Coefficients of friction- a dimensionless value that all materials have to determine the force in which friction acts against the foward movement.

Friction-resistance encountered by moving object: the resistance encountered by an object moving relative to another object with which it is in contact

Kinetic Friction- a retarding force on a moving object

Kinetic Energy- energy an object possesses becuase of its motion

Inertia- the tendency of an object to resist any attempt to change its velocity

Normal Force- a contact force that counteracts the force of gravity and keeps things upright

Potential Energy- the energy associated with the arrangement of a systemof objects that exert forces on each other. Stored energy before being changed into kinetic energy.

Static Friction- arises from contacting points that protrude beyond the general level of the surfaces.
