Newton's First Law

"An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force.  An object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by and unbalanced force."
                                        Sir Isaac Newton.

Basically, what Newton is saying is that the object that is not moving will remain not moving until something that is moving forces this object to move.

For example:

Homer J. Simpsons is standing still half naked and doing nothing down the street.  Later he get hits by a car while standing doing nothing for no reason.  The kinetic energy (energy of motion) of the car gets transferred to Homer as the car collides with his body.  This energy forces Homer's body against his will to move in the same direction as the car (assuming the car hits Homer at a 90 Degree angle).

Note: the pink line is the impact where the kinetic energy from the car gets transfered to Homer's body
