The Physics Behind the Home Run:

The objective of batting is to try and hit the ball as hard and as fast as possible. This can actually be quantified using several strategies. First the velocities of the bat and ball can be broken up into normal and tangential components as seen in the picture above. Then the conservation of energy can be applied along with the conservation of linear and angular momentum.

Another factor to be accounted for is the contact offset between the bat and the ball. This can be used along with the radius of the bat and ball to find the angle at which the ball will travel directly after the collision.

Using the results of these calculations one could determine the success rate of a hit at a particular angle by using the last picture.
