Reaction time

Many people don't understand how hard playing baseball really is.  It is actually one of the easiest games to comprehend conceptually, with limited rules and a very straight forward task, which then is interpreted as an easy sport to play.  This is very sadly mistaken.

The batter on the a baseball team that is getting ready to bat is standing 60.5 feet away from the pitcher who, in the Major Leagues is capable of throwing on average 94 mph. (3)

V(velocity)=d(distance)/t(time)
If you plug in the velocity and distance and do a couple conversions, the time that the ball has to reach home plate is only about half a second (439 milliseconds). (3)

The picture below will explain the process that must happen before the baseball player decides what to do during the balls flight time:

"Ted Williams once observed: 'Baseball is the only field of endeavor where a man can succeed three times out of ten and be considered a good performer'." (3)
