A Brief History of Football
American Football came about in 1897. Football was derived from the sport Rugby (basically the same game with different rules).
Walter Camp, the general athletic director and head football coach at Yale University, helped develop rules for the
sport by combining soccer and rugby rules. Walter Camp is known as "the father of football." The first pro football
performance was on November 12, 1892, when William Heffelfinger, of the Allengheny Athlectic Association (AAA), was
paid 500 dollars to play against the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. in 1896 AAA was the first complete professional team. Finally on
June 24, 1922 The American Professional Football Association became known as the National Football League (NFL).
By then the NFL acquired 18 football teams.
