Sydney Chapman

Ionospheric layer Formation

Sydney Chapman was the one who developed the theory of exactly how the layers in the ionosphere were ionized. The most important aspect of this is that high speed, non-charged particles can ionize certain layers of the ionosphere, generating the ring current. This current can lead to interesting phenomenon, such as the aurora, geomagnetic storms, and in turn, a drop in the earth's own magnetic field strength.
