In Summary, there is no right or wrong way to get on base safely when you need to.  Both of these techniques have been used over and over by many many players with a lot of debate still on the subject.  According to the calculations, it is actually faster to run into first base then to dive headfirst to it.  It all depends on the player's abilities and the circumstances of the game.  Some people might say that diving into first base is a matter of hustle, other people might say that you are risking injury for no reason.  As an avid baseball player and fan, I say, get on base any way you can!!
