headfirst
into first base is probably the most controversial choice of the
two. Still, many baseball players resort to diving headfirst
because they feel like they will have a better chance of getting on
base. "It just feels faster" said Rickey Henderson, a baseball
hall of famer, famous for his speed and an all-time stolen base
champion. According to David Peters, a Washington University physicist,
diving head first is "simple physics: as a runner slides headfirst, the
body's center of gravity - and therefore its momentum - is thrust
forwards."
