- In 1725, Celsius became
secretary of the Royal Society of Sciences and served with them until
his death in 1744.
- After his involvement in the
expedition led by Pierre Louis de Maupertuis, Celsius gained the
respect of the Swedish government and his peers, and was able to build
an interest in having a modern observatory constructed in Uppsala. He
was successful in obtaining donations for the construction and filled
the observatory with instruments that he purchased throughout his
voyages abroad.
- In addition to his aurora
borealis observations, Celsius made a series of observations using
colored glass plates as a recording tool of the magnitude, or
brightness, of stars. He was the first person to attempt to measure the
brightness of a star using something other than just the human eye.
Celsius made observations of eclipses and many other astronomical
events and published his observations of close to three hundred stars
and their magnitude using his own photometric system.
