Anders
Celsius is best known for his development if the centigrade temperature
scale. Celsius, as he kept meteorological records through the years,
was unhappy with what he thought was the inaccuracy of thermometers.
He
developed
a
100
degree centigrade scale that assigned the freezing
and boiling point of water at each end of the scale. However, these
points were the opposite of what they are today, 0 degrees being the
boiling point and 100 degrees being the freezing point.
Celsius introduced his temperature scale
to the Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1742. Shortly after Celsius died,
the centigrade scale was reversed to 0 degrees being the freezing point
and 100 degrees being the boiling point. Since the 1940s, what was
originally known as the centigrade scale started to be commonly
referred to as the Celsius scale.
