Turns

Allthough this may not be considered a stunt, it is definitely important concept that must be understood to make you a better rider.

The main way to steer a motorcycle at high speeds is counter steering, this is done by turning the handlebars in the opposite direction of the way you want to go, this will make your bike lean in the direction you want it to go. To understand this type of steering we can look at a gyroscope. If you take a gyroscope and spin it then turn it to the left or the right you will feel it wanting to tilt, if the wheel is turned to the left then the wheel will tilt to the right and vise-a-versa. This idea works the same way when applied to a motorcycle and the handlbars turning the wheel from left to right.

The motion of the wheel is described by the mathematical equation

T=IWv

Here T=torque, I=moment of inertia, W=angular speed and v=wheel speed. (Sarah Carter/Sport Rider 2002)

Knowing how to countersteer a motorcycle properly can keep you from up off the ground and enjoying the sport of motorcycling!!
