Meteors

The largest single meteorite found in the United States is the fifteen ton Willamette ( Oregon) iron meteorite found in 1902. Every day, approximately 3000 metric tons of dusty space material falls to Earth.

Meteors can have velocities up to 42 kilometers per second and are usually only the size of pebbles.. At this high velocity the debris burns up in the earths atmosphere. Once in a while some fragments are big enough so that not all of the particles burns up and the particles hit the earths surface. Meteors that hit the earths surface are called meteroites. When the meteor hits the earths surface it can cause a lot of damage.

The force of a meteorite that hits the earth would equal the final weight (after some of it's itnital weight has burnt off), multiplied by the final acceleration of the meteor. Because the velocity is so fast, the final force of the meteor is great.
