Why simulate particle physics on a computer?

Computer simulations at this low of a level are very common in accademic circles.  One use that come to mind first is fluid dynamics and wind tunnel simulations. Such simulations can find flaws in an airfoil or hull design in minutes.

In the extreme case, The alaska uses thier Arctic Region Supercomputing Center to help develop new materials ranging from plastics to jet fuel. Which is really exciting if you are a chemist!

You can even simulate ropes with particle/spring physics!
