Computer simulations at this low of a level are very
common in accademic circles. One use that come to mind first is
fluid dynamics and wind tunnel simulations. Such simulations can find
flaws in an airfoil or hull design in minutes.
In the extreme case, The alaska uses thier Arctic Region Supercomputing
Center to help develop new materials ranging from plastics to jet fuel.
