Glossary

Skis

"One of a pair of long flat runners of plastic, metal, or wood that curve upward in front and may be attached to a boot for gliding or traveling over snow." (Dictionary.com)

Cross-country skis

"Very light and narrow skis, usually have quite straight edges. The bindings attach at the toes only. They are usually coated with wax to reduce friction during forward motion, but also to get adhesion when going uphill. Some models may have patterns on the bottom to increase the friction when the ski slides backward. These skis are also used in biathlons." (Wikipedia)

Kick

Motion used to propel forward pushing with one of the legs.

Diagonal stride

Also known as classical skiing, is one of the most popular skiing techniques. To move, one pushes with one leg while gliding with another and uses arms to help to push forward. Almost all muscle groups are used this technique, which makes it a good exercise.

Friction

Regular cork

Static ( Ff = F * μs)

This kind of friction occurs when two objects are not moving relative to each other, held together by this force.

Kinetic ( Ff = F * μk)

Occurs when objects rub against each other. Energy of the objects are being converted to heat.

Cork

A device used to spread wax and polish on the ski surface.
