Electric Guitars
Electric guitars are a common instrument in most popular bands.  They are basic in design because they do not require the guitar itself to produce the sound.  Electric guitars are equipped with pickups that convert the string's vibrations into electrical impulses that are sent to the amps.  These guitars also have knobs and switches that alternate between the pickups and change the volume and tone of the sound.

Pickups work using a magnet wrapped with wire and strings that can be magnetized.  The string vibrates near the pickup magnet causing the string to create a changing magnetic flow through the wires in the pickup.  This change in magnetic flow creates a charge that flows to the amplifier.  This overall process can be compared to an electric generator on a very small scale.  This electric charge flows into the transistor in the amp that sends electricity to the speaker.
