Antiparticles and Anti-Cancer

One of the most promising applications of anti-particle technology is the use of Positron Emission Tomography (PET). With this technology, a patient is given a short half-lived radiopharmaceutical (which exposes the patient to about as much radiation as two chest x-rays). These radiopharmaceuticals discharge positrons from wherever they are used within the body which react with electrons and annihilate- producing gamma rays which are detected by the scanner.

The images produced by this technology are of very high quality, and are used to map out organs and to detect and grade tumors.
