EARTH’S MAGNETIC FIELD

When the solar wind is blowing in the direction of earth, earth’s magnetic field pulls the particles of the wind in the directions of the north and south magnetic poles.

The earth’s magnetic field: its strongest pull is located around the north and south poles.

The interaction between the solar wind and the earth’s magnetic field is what causes the aurora.

When the solar wind and the earth’s magnetic sphere interact an electrical discharge occurs.  An electrical discharge occurs when electricity passes through a thin gas.  The electrical discharge produces a visible light, which is the aurora.  (University of Alaska, 1)
