How so?

In the reports I have read, it says that he noticed that the smoke rose in a column above the experiment. Now, smoke can rise in columns during lots of experiments with spinning things (which is what his experiment included), it doesn't mean anything special. Why this seemed abnormal and gave him ideas, I haven't figured out, but that's the story.
