ABSTRACT

Alan Delamere has designed instruments and a mission to observe the nucleus of comets starting with comet Halley in 1986 and continuing to Comet ISON as it flew by Mars in early October. This talk covers the evolution of our understanding of comets over the past 30 years. Details on the missions and instrumentation will be briefly described. The excitement of exploring the unknown highlights the talk.
