ABSTRACT

We propose a new solar wind (SW) dynamo model for driving the earthward convection and enhancing the plasma pressure in the near-Earth plasma sheet by tail-lobe current loops. Efficiency of the new SW dynamo is regulated up or down by dayside or tail reconnection. Magnetic storms and auroral substorms are driven predominantly by the tail-lobe current loops, distributed along the northern and southern tail lobes.
