ABSTRACT

Sprites are transient luminous events witnessed in the middle atmosphere above active thunderstorms. We review the basics of sprites and related phenomena, and discuss recent measurements of sprites made with high speed digital cameras.  Our observations were made at 10,000 frames per second (100 ms temporal resolution) at varying spatial resolutions. These observations reveal details of both the spectral and spatial evolution of sprite development.
