ABSTRACT

While doing some unrelated technobrowsing recently, my eye caught a link to the cited article, which was published just the day before (Brumfiel, naturenews 9/3/2009, doi:10.1038/news.2009.881). With the goal of discerning the truth behind that hyperbolic headline, I will look at: the history of magnetic monopoles; their place in physics and how they are incorporated into physical theories; their properties and how we have tried to detect them; the theory and experiments leading to the cited article; the nature of the "evidenced" monopoles; and some physics that we could do with magnetic monopoles.
