The final step is to run the print through the chemicals. The chemicals used here are similar to the ones for the film. We’ve got: developer, stop, fix, water rinse and photo finish. Basically, they do exactly the same thing as the film baths. The film developer, which is basic, produces the image on the film by interacting with the light-sensitive exposed silver crystals. The result is the dark image on the paper. The stop bath is then used to stop the developer by using a mild acetic acid or sometimes water. The fixer removes the leftover unexposed silver crystals from the paper. After the fixer it is safe to view the film in light. The next step is a water rinse and we just rinse the chemicals off of the paper. Then we put a photo finish on it so the water doesn’t dry onto the paper.
