Histology of Nervous Tissue
Nervous Tissue consist of neurons which provide most of the functions of the nervous system such as sensing, thinking, making decisions, remembering, controlling muscle activity and regulating glandular secretion. Neuroglia  are supporting cells that nourish and protect neurons. Functionally, neurons are classified according to the direction in which the nerve impulse is conveyed with respect to the central nervous system: sensory or afferent neurons, motor or efferent neurons, and inter neuron or association neurons. Sensory neurons carry messages from the eyes, ears, skin, and other organs to the central nervous system, motor neurons carry signals from the central nervous system to muscles and can signal them to contract and inter neuron which transmits signals between neurons. Neurons (nerve cells) possess electrical excitability which is the ability to respond to a stimulus and convert this information into an action potential. A stimulus is any change in the external or internal environment that is strong enough to elicit an action potential. An action potential or nerve impulse is an electrical signal that propagates along the surface of the membrane of a neuron.
