Walking vs. Running: Which one is
more efficient?
- Running use more energy than
walking
- Running have higher
energetic cost and oxygen consumption.
- Any territorial animals
shows higher oxygen consumption as
increase speed regardless of body size.
- Higher oscillation
contribute for increasing energetic cost
- During walking, the
pendulum movement of legs is
determined by action of gravity force
on mass center and have lower vertical
oscillation; thus, minimizing energy
cost.
- Running have higher
oscillation on gravity center on the
vertical plane, so it is result in
larger energy expenditure.
- Faster walking is less efficient
than running same distance
- At relatively high speed, oxygen
intake during walking exceed oxygen intake
during running.
- Springs and tendon is effective way
to save energy for running, but not for
walking.
- Walking lacks muscle contraction
and exert less force with high metabolic
rate
- Legs cannot sustain and strain
energy which is gained in the initial
impact and not much power to push off the
ground.
