Walking vs. Running: Which one is more efficient?

  • Running use more energy than walking
    • Running have higher energetic cost and oxygen consumption.
    • Any territorial animals shows higher oxygen consumption as increase speed regardless of body size.
    • Higher oscillation contribute for increasing energetic cost
      • During walking, the pendulum movement of legs is determined by action of gravity force on mass center and have lower vertical oscillation; thus, minimizing energy cost.
      • Running have higher oscillation on gravity center on the vertical plane, so it is result in larger energy expenditure.

  • Faster walking is less efficient than running same distance
    • At relatively high speed, oxygen intake during walking exceed oxygen intake during running.
    • Springs and tendon is effective way to save energy for running, but not for walking.
      • Walking lacks muscle contraction and exert less force with high metabolic rate
      • Legs cannot sustain and strain energy which is gained in the initial impact and not much power to push off the ground.
