These are organic compounds whose electrons move from one end of the polymer to the other, due to extended p-orbitals. As a current is applied, one side is oxidized and the other is reduced, resulting in one side expanding and the other contracting. This is mechanical energy. An application of this would be creating micro muscles for robots. |
