Edward Teller strongly advocated the use of nuclear power in a non-military way. He had several projects and various ways of using nuclear power. However, he could never get enough support to make these dreams come true. He was famous for explaining how safe nuclear reactors in nuclear power plants were. However, in 1979 when the nuclear disaster of Three Mile Island occurred all eyes were on Teller. Three Mile Island was an accident that happened as a result of a loss of cooling material in the nuclear power plant. Because of this there was a lot of damage done to the nuclear power plant core. The meltdown at Three Mile Island did not release any radioactive material into the environment.
However, shortly after the Three Mile Island incident a movie came out starring Jane Fonda. Jane Fonda was a strong advocated not using nuclear power. The movie, The China Syndrome, was meant to make the public aware of the dangers of using nuclear power. This movie portrayed a fictional event that is not possible. In this movie the reactor core would melt down through the powered plant and down through the earth until it reached water. The reactor mixed with the water would cause a steam explosion. The steam explosion would cause massive amounts of radioactive material to be emitted.
After this movie was released Teller had a hart attack. His reasoning for the heart attack was Jane Fonda. He wrote in The Wall Street Journal, "'On May 7, a few weeks after the accident at Three-Mile Island, I was in Washington. I was there to refute some of that propaganda that Ralph Nadar, Jane Fonda and their kind are spewing on to the news media in their attempt to frighten people away from nuclear power. I am 71 years old, and I was working 20 hours a day. The strain was too much. The next day, I suffered a heart attack. You might say that I was the only one whose health was affected by that nuclear reactor near Harrisburg. No, that would be wrong. It was not the reactor. It was Jane Fonda. Reactors are not dangerous." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Teller
